Sermon Series: Nice: Why We Love to be Liked and How God Calls Us to More

Niceness keeps the peace, wins friends, gains influence, and serves our reputations well, but it also takes the teeth out of our witness and the power out of our faith. Based on the book by Pastor Sharon Hodde Miller, this series explores the seemingly innocent idol that has crept into our faith and quietly corrupted it.

Today’s Sermon: Bitter: The Fruit of Cynicism

Scripture: Ephesians 4:1-6, 31-32

Because niceness is inherently inauthentic, if we use it to our own advantage, we can be tempted to assume everyone else is too. Similarly, if our niceness is taken advantage of or it doesn’t get us what we want, it too can lead to anger and cynicism. However, neither of these perspectives are how God calls us to see one another and the world around us.

Lord I Need You

Verse 1:
Lord I come, I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
Without You I fall apart
You’re the one that guides my heart

Chorus:
Lord, I need You, oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You

Verse 2:
Where sin runs deep, Your grace is more
Where grace is found is where You are
And where You are Lord I am free
Holiness is Christ in me
Yes where You are Lord I am free
Holiness is Christ in me

Bridge:
So teach my song to rise to You
When temptation comes my way
And when I cannot stand I’ll fall on You
Jesus You’re my hope and stay
And when I cannot stand I’ll fall on You
Jesus You’re my hope and stay

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

Great is Thy faithfulness
O God my Father
There is no shadow of turning with Thee
Thou changest not
Thy compassions they fail not
As Thou hast been
Thou forever will be

Great is Thy faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
And all I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness
Lord unto me

Pardon for sin
And a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer
And to guide
Strength for today
and bright hope for tomorrow
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside

Great is Thy faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness
Lord every morning new mercies I see
And all I have needed Thy hands hath
provided
Great is Thy faithfulness
Lord unto me

Online Service – Scripture

Ephesians 4:1-6, 31-32

I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.

Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.

Psalm 91

You who live in the shelter of the Most High,
who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,
will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress;
my God, in whom I trust.”
For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
    and from the deadly pestilence;
he will cover you with his pinions,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
You will not fear the terror of the night,
or the arrow that flies by day,
or the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
or the destruction that wastes at noonday.

A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
You will only look with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.

Because you have made the Lord your refuge,
the Most High your dwelling place,
no evil shall befall you,
no scourge come near your tent.

For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
On their hands they will bear you up,
so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the lion and the adder,
the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot.

Those who love me, I will deliver;
I will protect those who know my name.
When they call to me, I will answer them;
I will be with them in trouble,
I will rescue them and honor them.
With long life I will satisfy them,
    and show them my salvation.

Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
   Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
   Born of the virgin Mary,
   Suffered under Pontius Pilate
   Was crucified, died, and was buried;
   He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
   He ascended into heaven,
Is seated at the right hand of the Father,
And will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
   The holy catholic church,
   The communion of saints,
   The forgiveness of sins,
   The resurrection of the body,
   And the life everlasting.

Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
   hallowed be thy name.
   Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
   but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory,
   forever. Amen.

Invitation, Confession, and Pardon

Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him,
who earnestly repent of their sin
and seek to live in peace with one another.
Therefore, let us confess our sin before God and one another.

Merciful God,
we confess that we have not loved
you with our whole heart.

We have failed to be an obedient church.
We have not done your will,
   we have broken your law,
we have rebelled against your love,
we have not loved our neighbors,
and we have not heard the cry of the needy.
Forgive us, we pray.
Free us for joyful obedience,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hear the good news:
Christ died for us while we were yet sinners;
that proves God’s love toward us.
In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!

In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!
Glory to God. Amen.

Hi Lakeside Family!

We miss you and look forward to getting back together for worship. Please see below for ways for us to stay connected and serve our community.  We are praying for you.

All live or pre-recorded services will remain available on our Facebook Page, so even if you cannot be online at 10:00am, you can watch it later.

For those who don’t have Facebook, you can view the service at LakesideUMC.net/live

How We Will Gather

We launched a Facebook Group for Lakeside UMC. You are invited to join the group by clicking the following link and requesting entrance: https://www.facebook.com/groups/lakesideumc

This is different than our Facebook Page, which many of you follow. We also have dedicated groups for our Youth Ministry and Kids Ministry.

How We Will Care For One Another

We have created a congregation care plan, and we need your help. If you would like to be checked in on occasionally by a fellow Lakeside member, or you would like to volunteer to check in on your fellow congregation members, please fill out the form here: https://lakesideumc.churchcenter.com/people/forms/112867
