Sermon Series: Nice: Why We Love to be Liked and How God Calls Us to More

Niceness keeps the peace, wins friends, gains influence, and serves our reputations well, but it also takes the teeth out of our witness and the power out of our faith. Based on the book by Pastor Sharon Hodde Miller, this series explores the seemingly innocent idol that has crept into our faith and quietly corrupted it.

Today’s Sermon: Rotten: The Fruit of Corruption

Scripture: James 1: 2-5, 19-22

As we noted last week, niceness can function like a Trojan Horse, providing cover for something terrible within. This is something we battle both within ourselves and in our relationships with others – particularly those who are nice to us. The way we root out this bad fruit is through wisdom and discernment.

Today’s Sermon: Fake: The Fruit of Inauthenticity

Scripture: Matthew 7:16-20

In a compelling illustration, Jesus teaches that the health of a tree is evident in the quality of its fruit. And though being nice is one of the most valued qualities in the church and the world, a close inspection shows that it can easily lead to bad fruit – the first among them being inauthenticity.

Sermon Series: How We Do It.

As the Methodist movement started to grow, it was no longer possible for John Wesley to personally oversee and guide every group that was meeting. He realized that *how* they did things was as important as *what* they did. And so, he gave Methodists three simple rules as a guide.

Today’s Sermon: Stay In Love With God

Scripture:Mark 1:32-39

The final of John Wesley’s Three General Rules for Methodists is the simplest of them all, and yet for some of us, it’s the easiest to neglect. What makes this such a tragedy is that this rule – stay in love with God – is actually the engine that powers everything else.

Today’s Sermon: Do Good

Scripture:James 2:14-26

Working toward doing no harm is a big and important first step. But it can leave us wondering what, if anything, we are supposed to do. How do I stand for what I believe? Is sitting it out ok? What difference can I really make in a world so big and so broken? These are all a part of the discussion around Wesley’s second general rule: do good.

Today’s Sermon: Do No Harm

Scripture:Matthew 5:38-48

The first of Wesley’s three general rules for Methodists was to do no harm. We are living in a time of great polarization, debate, and change—within our Church, country, and world. How might the way in which we work through these challenges differ if we committed to following the first of Wesley’s three general rules for Methodists: do no harm?

Today’s Sermon: The Anatomy of an Echo: An Illustration of Discipleship

Scripture: John 14: 8-16

Discipleship is one of those “church words” that get used a lot. And while we generally know what it means – to grow as a follower of Jesus – it sometimes helps to have a concrete image we can relate it to. The anatomy of an echo offers a simple yet powerful illustration of what discipleship can look like.
